This was the title of the first joint conference between the British Union of Spiritist Societies (BUSS) and the Spirit Release Foundation as a panel of nine world leaders in their field from two continents came together in London in October. Seven of these speakers were highly qualified doctors, many of whom were psychotherapists, and some were practising mediums.
Dr Andrew Powell, the founder of the Psychiatry and Spirituality Special Interest Group at the Royal College of Psychiatrists brought these specialists together to "unite science and spirituality" in this "key note" conference.
A Brazilian delegation of doctors were on the first leg of a European tour. Brazil leads the world in working with mediumship and spiritual healing and their methods are becoming more widely known and used in the UK and around the world.
Dr Marlene Nobre, herself a medium, spoke about holistic healing that incorporates mental, emotional and physical wellbeing which can only take place if the spiritual dimension is recognised. In the West, this area is neglected - if not denied - by those who treat all types of illnesses. This dimension is most imperative to understand when treating mental distress and emotional imbalance.
Dr Roberto Lucio Souza showed us with the wonderful example of a psychiatric hospital in Brazil where patients are treated in caring ways which do not just include antipsychotic drugs (that have both known and unknown side effects, add to chemical pollution of our planet and involve live animal experimentation ). These lucky patients are offered all kinds of sports, art, meditation and other kinds of therapy, including spiritual healing.
Professor Alexander Moreira de Almeida introduced us to his research studies comparing mediums with patients with dissociative disorders. These studies provide information on how functioning mediums hear 'meaningful' voices, whereas the other less capable category hear voices which disturb, distract and distress. This work questions whether education and retraining can help dissociated patients make use of their ability to hear spirit voices.
Two speakers, Dr Decio landoli Jr and Dr Serena Roney-Dougal, spoke about the role of the mysterious pineal gland, which was named by Rene Descartes "The Seat of the Soul". This organ was thought to be unnecessary (vestigial) but is now found to be responsible for animal migration and hibernation, it is a vital part of the endocrine system, governs our day and night sleep cycle, and, in recent research is considered to hold secrets concerning mediumship.
Our very own David Furlong kindly provided an example of ancestral therapy from his own background, and Tony Neate provided a case study on reincarnational therapy.
Dr Alan Sanderson detailed a case study of a severely affected patient who required spirit release.
